HHS_Career_Fair.png thumbnail262601

On Tuesday, November 19, Harborfields High School students had a unique opportunity to meet and mingle with more than 70 employers at the second annual Career Connect, Trade, and Talent Expo.

At Harborfields High School, the mission of the Career Awareness class is to prepare students to not only enter the workforce, but to do so with all the tools they need to succeed. The class teaches students about career exploration, job interviewing, on the job practices, and financial responsibility. The classes cornerstone event is the Career Connect, Trade, & Talent Expo.

Dr. Alison Matthews, CTE Coordinator, kicked off the event with thank yous and the introduction of a few special guests. Those special guests included former Harborfields Superintendent turned Huntington Town Councilman, Dr. Dave Bernardo,  New York State Senator Mario R. Mattera, and Suffolk County Legislator Stephanie Bontempi.

Following the remarks from the local government officials, Christopher White, Deputy Commissioner for Workforce Development at the New York State Department of Labor, provided a poignant keynote address. He highlighted the trends in the workforce, the most sought after skills, and the ways career paths have changed over time. Following his remarks, Mr. White moderated a panel discussion of 16 employers. Each individual gave students their best career advice and the characteristics they’re looking for when hiring new employees.

Once the panel discussion ended, students excitedly entered the North Gym where employer tables were set up. The employers at the event worked in a variety of fields including: local unions, law enforcement, hospitality and tourism, finance, marketing, information technology, education, and many more. With green tote bags in tow, students visited the tables and networked with the employers.

The Career Readiness Network at HHS is committed to helping students discover their passions, explore pathways, and develop career-readiness skills that prepare them for all future endeavors. The Career Connect, Trade, and Talent Expo is just one of many opportunities available to students who are involved with the CRN. AP_Honor_Roll_(1).png thumbnail262451

Harborfields Central School District has been awarded the AP Honor Roll Gold with Access designation.

This honor places the district among a select group of districts noted for excellence and equitable access to advanced coursework.

The award reflects the district's success in meeting key benchmarks linked to postsecondary readiness, including:

  • College Culture: 78% of our graduating students have taken at least one AP exam, supporting a college-focused culture within the high school.
  • College Credit: 70% of our graduating cohort achieved scores of 3 or higher on the AP exam, aligning with college credit standards.
  • College Optimization: 29% of our cohort has taken five or more AP exams across grades, with at least one exam in 9th or 10th grade, encouraging a balanced approach to AP participation throughout high school.

Schools on the AP Honor Roll are also eligible for the AP Access Award, which celebrates schools whose AP participation among underrepresented minority and low-income students mirrors the overall school demographics - demonstrating Harborfields' dedication to diversity and equitable access in the AP program.

This achievement reflects the impact of the strategic action plan, which prioritizes expanding opportunities for students, delivering targeted professional development, and enhancing support for all students.

"Once again, our students have demonstrated outstanding achievement with the support of their wonderful teachers and caring families," said Dr. Rory Manning, Superintendent of Schools. "College and career readiness has been a focus of the work of the Strategic Plan and it is clear that this work is providing fantastic opportunities for our students to leave high school with many college credits in hand. I am particularly proud of the Access recognition through the College Board which signifies the efforts of our administrators, counselors, and teachers to ensure that ALL students have access to the most rigorous curriculum."

The Harborfields Central School District is proud to be recognized for their efforts in building a robust AP program that serves all students and reflects the district's commitment to educational excellence and equity.

Honoring Our Veterans

Veterans_Day_WDPS.png thumbnail262227

On Thursday, November 7, Washington Drive Primary School came together to honor and celebrate our beloved Veterans.

The celebration started with breakfast provided by the PTA, where the veterans and their families could spend time together. The event continued with no shortage of meaningful touches! First, the Hall of Heroes, where students and staff honored family members who have served. The red and blue posters made for a beautiful decoration, but the stories and photos were the most special part.

Mrs. McNally, WDPS Principal, Dr. Manning, Superintendent, and Mrs. Chmura, WDPS teacher, all shared remarks and thanked the Veterans for not only attending the celebration, but for their courage, bravery, and dedication to our country. Mrs. Chmura invited the Veterans and their Washington Drive relative to move to the chairs by the stage for a front row view of what was to come.

Next, students cheered, clapped, and waved as they paraded past the Veterans and their families while patriotic music played in the background. Some students got out of the parade line to hand deliver cards to the Veterans. The final group of students to come through was Mrs. Sullivan and Mrs. Chmura's class. They stopped in front of the Veterans and gave a heartfelt performance of a few nostalgic songs. The smiles on the Veterans faces made it clear that they had been touched by the students gratitude and appreciation.

The students were dismissed back to their classrooms, but there was one thing left to do to honor these incredible individuals. Mrs. McNally asked the distinguished guests to add their signature to the sign that represented their branch of service: Navy, Marines, Army, Air Force, or Coast Guard. While they were signing, she asked them to share their branch and years of service.

With respect, honor, and gratitude... thank you, Veterans!
